Getting Started

DOS users who are installing CT for the first time, or who want to completely refresh their CT installation should download and run CT_SETUP.EXE. This may not be the most current release, however. You should also download and read the CT9 Manual, release notes and Frequently Asked Questions! If you have already installed CT and wish to update the program to the latest release (program file only), then download and unzip the numbered update below.

Older versions of CT can be found on the archives page.

Windows users can download and install the character-mode version of CT for Windows. CTWin is packaged as a .ZIP archive. After unzipping the archive, run the SETUP.EXE program to begin the installation.

  • If you are installing for the first time, you will be prompted for the install location. Follow the directions.
  • If you are updating CTWin 9.71 or later, select "Repair Installation" and it will update your current installation with the new files.
  • If you are updating CTWin 9.70 or earlier, you must use Add/Remove Programs from the Windows Control Panel to completely uninstall the old version before installing the new version.

To update the country or section files, download the appropriate archive below and unzip them into your existing CT for DOS or Windows directory.

Most files below are packaged into a ZIP archive. Use a program like PKUNZIP or WinZIP to unpack them.

Complete installation package for CT 9.89.003 - setup using this, then download latest updates
CT9 Manual (PDF)
CT9 manual, last revised in 1999. It says Version 9.89 - that is not correct. John Bednar, K3CT has consolidated the release notes into a CT Manual Update.
Hank Kohl, K8DD started updating the CT9 Manual, resulting in this unofficial version (PDF). He never finished, however.
CT9 release notes - current release at 9.92.001 - CTWIN is now at 9.92.001
CT10 release notes - current release at 10.04.001 - CTWIN is now at 10.04.001

The following update contains only the CT program itself (CT.EXE) and the latest release notes. It is not a full installation copy. Rather, it is supposed to be installed (unzipped) into an existing CT directory which was created by installing the software from the original floppy disk. It is not meant to stand alone. There are too many other support files that CT requires to put CT.EXE into its own directory and expect it to work.

You only need to install the latest version, it contains fixes from all the previous versions.

CT 9.92.001

  • The TenTec Orion is now supported.
  • PTT now works with paddle sending. You should not need to turn on your VOX on CW. The important text commands are:

PTTDELAY - set the delay from PTT to first keydown in milliseconds. A good number is 20 for most amps.

PTTHANG - set the time the PTT stays asserted after you stop sending. This is in baud (dot times). A good number to start with is 5. This is the equivalent of VOX delay on your radio.

  • The repeat function in CW finally works properly again. If you are in repeat mode and press F1 (or anything else) while the waiting for the next CQ to start, it starts right away. This has been broken for a while.

CT 10.04.001- 15 Sep 2008

  • Add Elecraft K3
  • Add Icom 703
  • Fix ALT-M for NEQP and CQP
  • Fix ALT-Z for NEQP

CT 10.03

  • Add Icom 756 Pro III
  • Add Icom 7800
  • Fix the QSX problem with IC756 series and IC7800 radios
  • Numerous tweaks for New England QSO party
  • New Feature: When using Ctrl-Enter to manually add calls to the announce window, the entry is now marked with a '#' to indicate the entry was local and not from the Cluster network. This is used by multi-ops with a second receiver finding new stations.
  • Ctrl Down Arrow now controls the DVP input gain again. It had previously been re-mapped for use in partner mode.
  • UA9I now mapped to CQWW Zone 18
UA9M now mapped to CQWW Zone 17 (tnx AD1C)
  • Fixed IC751 support
  • Fixed WPX parsing:
    E20HHK/4 parses to E24
    M/AD1C parses to M0
    AD1C/M parses to AD1
    9Q/F6BLQ parses to 9Q0
special cases such as RW1AI/ANT now parse to RW1, not ANT0 (tnx AD1C)
  • Fixed rewrite of cty.dat file after a country setting operation such as VP8DJK=VP8/h (tnx AD1C)
  • Allow ct.cfg to set baud rate up 57600
  • Fixed the "Check Partial window is not restored properly on reboot" problem.
  • Fixed 4U60UN=4U1U created extra mults in ARRL 160 test
  • Fixed the extra ZS8 entries when re-writing CTY.DAT
  • Fixed QSO B4 problem. QSO B4 is now sent when:
    • NOWORKDUPE has been set
    • Cursor Cursor is in the last line of the logging window (call entry)
    • The call there is a dupe
    • Insert is pressed

CT will send the other stations call, then "QSO B4". As a reminder, you can send QSO B4 anytime manually by pressing ALT F7 (tnx N6TV)

  • New behavior: when INS is pressed, the CALLSIGN and MULT windows are updated to let the operator see what bands the station and mult are needed on while the report is being sent. I should have added this feature 20 years ago. (tnx K3CT)
  • Fixed dupe checking problem in CQP (tnx K1EP)
  • New Behavior: keyboard translation is inhibited when in the Gab Window and Notes Windows
  • Fixed the +/- speed control inside CW messages. (tnx K3CT)
  • The -TT command line switch is deprecated. This was the AA6TT switch at one time.
  • Partner mode has changed a bit. As before, prepare for partner mode by typing PARTNER and <CR> in the callsign field, then enter your partner's station number. You each should do this. Enter partner mode with ALT F11. Your cursor and focus stay in the regular callsign window, but the black partner window shows up on your partner's computer. Thereafter, the partner window on the other computer tracks your callsign field. Both ops can enter partner mode and see exactly what the other op types. This can be used for trading insults, as well as callsigns. Ctrl Down Arrow no longer swaps the contents for the callsign and partner fields. On CW you may use Ctrl Insert to answer the callsign in the partner window.

    CTWIN 9.92.001 - version 9.92.001
    CTWIN 10.04.001 - version 10.04.001

Some of the support DLL's have changed and the install should work now. The TELNET tnc connection now resets so you can log off one node, then log on to another. Please do a complete uninstall to get rid of the old DLLs before installing this version.

The LPT driver has been changed and should work for most users.

    WIN95 is not supported.

COM ports - Use -enet for networking over Ethernet. All comports work for radios, TNC and networks. CW keying does not work on COM ports.

LPT ports - All LPT functions should work: CW keying, PTT, band info out and radio1/radio2.

DVP - is not supported at all.
